Our youth basketball program is separated into three age groups; ages 4-6, and 7-8, and 9-10. For children age 4-6 the program is primarily a skills and drills clinic with a large focus on concepts of the game and individual skills. For children age 7-10 an additional focus on “team skills” and “game skills” are introduced into the program.
For the 4-6 age group each week the game plan will introduce new skills and drills as well as a reinforcement of the previous weeks learnings. Some examples of skill development for this age group are dribbling, passing, and shooting. Players will work on dribbling in place, and while running. Passing drills include chest passes, and bounce passes. Shooting drills will include lay-ups, free throws, and jump shots. Concepts in this age group include, boundaries, sportsmanship, and teamwork. For our six year olds we will introduce the fundamentals of rebounding as well as the fundamentals of man to man defense.
For the 7-10 age group the first two weeks are for coaches to assess their teams and review game fundamentals. In week three we have our first scrimmage and in week four we begin games. During the assessment period, “concepts”, “individual skills”, “team skills”, and “game skills” will be introduced. Each week coaches will reinforce individual skill development and team concepts. Some examples of concepts covered for the 7-10 age group are man to man defense, basic offensive plays, and game situations such as “out of bounds” and “jump balls”. Individuals skills will build on fundamentals of dribbling, passing and shooting. Team skills will consist of offensive plays and defensive positioning. Game skills will include playing full court basketball with officials and running time.
Ready-Set-Sports provides JrNBA jerseys and shorts as well as all equipment. Children will be required to wear sneakers or tennis shoes.
